Hollow Gaussian beam: Generation, transformation and application in optical limiting

AbstractThe hollow Gaussian beam can be generated by thermal lens effect for a Gaussian beam propagating through a medium with finite optical absorption. The new model of hollow Gaussian beam (HGB) is proposed by the effective thermal focal length at steady state. The transformation between the HGB and quasi-hollow beam is achieved by tunable input power. Based on the experimental and numerical analysis, the quasi-hollow beam is the superposition of various orders of single HGB. Besides, the property of optical limiting of hollow or quasi-hollow beam is investigated. It shows that the output intensity linearly increases as the input intensity increases when input intensity is below 34 W/cm(2), while changes of intensity through the aperture is very low when input intensity is above 34 W/cm(2) so that the optical limiting is achieved. Our theoretical and experimental results may have potential applications in optical tweezers, optical limiting, low power all-optical devices and related fields.
